The Cayo
District is the largest district in Belize. It is home to the nation's
capital, Belmopan City. This district is primarily agricultural,
however, recently oil was found in Spanish Lookout, a village in the
Cayo District, and is now in production. The chief crops being produced
in Cayo District are oranges, grapefruit, tangerine and bananas. |
Ecotourism
is also an integral part of the region's economy and is evident in the
many existing nature reserves including two National Parks, Blue Hole
and Guanacaste National Park. In addition, Cayo District has many
Pre-Colombian Maya ruins: Xunantunich, Cahal Pech and
Caracol.
The district capital of Cayo District is San Ignacio Town. Benque Viejo del Carmen is the other town in the district while the villages are San Antonio Cayo, Valley of Peace, St. Margaret's, Roaring Creek, Armenia, San Jose Succotz, Arenal, Buena Vista, Calla Creek, Esperanza, Cristo Rey, Georgeville, Unitedville, Blackman Eddy, Ontario, Camalote, Los Tambos, More Tomorrow and Spanish Lookout.
Two major highways run through Cayo District: the Western Highway runs from Belize City to the Guatemalan border, and the Hummingbird Highway which starts in Belmopan and ends at the juncture of the Coastal Road and the Southern Highway in Stann Creek.
