Belize Greatest Dive Sites (Turneffe Islands)

The greatest dive sites in Belize are found just around the country’s three enchanting coral atolls: Turneffe Islands, Glover Reef and the Light House Reef located seaward of the barrier reef. Turneffe Islands is the largest and closest of the three in distance from Belize City. There are seventy diving sites that surround Turneffe Atolls. Although Turneffe is well known for wall diving, there are many shallow sea gardens excellent for snorkeling and scuba diving inside the reef. It has good spots for diving day and night. In the area there are enormous schools of grunts, groupers, snappers, bonefish, permit, spadefish and jacks. Many sites along the east and west sides of the island features craggy drop-offs laced with sponges and black corals, and nooks and crannies where turtles and nurse sharks like to hide. One of the most popular sites to dive and fish in Belize is in Turneffe Islands which has crystal clear water.

Turneffe is also for kayaking and sailing apart form fishing and diving. Turneffe Islands are worldwide known for its flats action, and anglers will feel right at home at Turneffe Flats. The beach white sandy fronts are excellent for developing nicely for tourism.

Turneffe is the largest of Belize three atolls and is located approximately 25 miles of Belize City which is about 50 minutes boat ride. It is home to pristine little Cayes cloaked in palms which encircle the crystal clear lagoon waters. Orchids abounding the lagoons and inky blue waters plummet to thousands of feet not far out side the atoll and only few yards from the world’s second largest barrier reef. It offers world class fishing both flats and offshore and diving and snorkeling.

By the Northeast of the Turneffe Islands is the famous Blue Hole which is a diver’s dream. The spectacular perfect blue circle is about 1000 feet in diameter and more than 400 feet deep with cavern with the largest underwater dripstones ever found.
